How past climatic shifts shaped the evolution of geckos

Updated : November 06, 2019 05:35 PM IST

The diversification of the Indian group of Hemidactylus geckos from a common ancestor into climbing and ground-dwelling species is linked to two past climatic events, researchers have said in two separate studies.
The climatic events are Eocene-Oligocene cooling (33.5 million years ago when Earth underwent rapid cooling) and Miocene aridification (around 14 million years ago).
The research also sheds light on the importance of dry zones or the open grasslands that have been generally regarded as wastelands but hold undiscovered diversity.
