CNBC-TV18’s special series - Election and Market - analyses how the BJP government has performed in various key sectors of the economy.
Rajan Mathews, director general, COAI and Rajiv Sharma, co-head-research, SBICAP Securities look at the telecom sector and how it has performed over the last five years.
“The present government has done a number of things that contributed to the progress of the telecom industry. The government has addressed the whole issue of spectrum sharing, spectrum trading and various other the concerns of the industry,” Mathews said.
"However, we have done more damage to ourselves in terms of the bruising telecom war, tariff war and our concerns were more with the regulator than with the policymaking,” added Mathews.
The National Telecom Policy (NTP), 2018 implemented by the government was a landmark decision, said Sharma. "In terms of data subscribers, we have gone from 60 million to 500 million, of which 400 million are 4G," he said.
All this is positive, the only problem has been revenue CAGR, which has been down by double-digits, said Sharma.
