This is year of flexible smartphones. Amidst the much talked about foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Fold and Mate X, CNBC-TV18 spotted another flexible display device that’s an amalgamation of smartwatch and a smartphone. Nubia Alpha is a smartwatch that is catching lot of eyeballs here in Barcelona.
The 4-inch flexible OLED display felt like a massive bracelet at least on my wrist. Powered by custom Android-based OS can be navigated through via gesture controls which is the highlight of this smartwatch. These gestures are coupled with a few physical buttons on the side of the device.
You can use the Nubia Alpha has a fitness tracker, to make payments and even attend voice calls, pretty much what a standard smartwatch can do today. A 5-megapixel camera has also been thrown into this mix that lets you take, almost non-flattering selfies, you will need to perfect the angle on this one.
Under that flexible screen sits 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a 500mAh battery which Nubia translates to two days of usage.INITIAL VERDICT
Now the long term functionality of this forma factor is debatable. For now, let’s just say it good to see hardware makers pushing the envelope when it comes to design. Starting April, the Nubia Alpha will be available in Europe and North America for €449.
