Government announces lifelong monthly pension for athletes

Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju has announced 'pension to meritorious sportspersons' scheme. Under the scheme, Indian athletes get a lifelong monthly pension.

Athletes who have won international sporting or paralympic events are eligible. Pension is receivable after the age of 30 or upon retirement, whichever later. Currently, 627 sportspersons are getting lifelong pension.

The pension ranges from Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000. The ministry has also implemented the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for sportspersons.

This caters to yesteryear athletes who are now living in indigent conditions and for medical treatment of sportspersons.
