PM Kisan scheme's Rs 20,000 crore may remain unused due to model code of conduct

Updated : March 19, 2019 10:32 PM IST

More than Rs 20,000-crore allocated to the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Programme for the current fiscal may remain unused due to the model code of conduct imposed by the election commission (EC) before the general elections starting next month.

The EC has clarified that the government cannot add new beneficiaries under the direct cash transfer.

Among other things, the model code of conduct bars the government from announcing any policy move that may impact voters' decision.

In the interim budget, the centre had announced a massive farm relief of Rs 75,000-crore. The programme will provide Rs 6,000 to farmers owning lander under 2 hectares.
