Mission Paani: Yamuna Flood Natural Water Storage Project to tackle Delhi's water woes

Updated : July 16, 2019 12:49 PM IST

Delhi's groundwater is depleting, with the city supplying more water than its capacity. The Delhi government has put together an ambitious plan to combat this. It has a nod from the Centre, but there are other hurdles.

In an attempt to deal with water woes and make the national capital self-sufficient when it comes to water the Delhi government has launched Yamuna flood Natural Water Storage Project. The idea is rainwater harvesting by constructing small ponds so when the Yamuna overflows, the overflowing water fills these ponds and raises the water table.

Deli government has received full corporation from the Jal Shakti minister and quick approvals have been provided by the Centre for the project.

It indeed is an ambitious plan by the Delhi government to construct strings of reservoirs or ponds along the flood plains of the Yamuna, the government believes this could be a game-changer but what it really needs to sort out is the NGT approvals and the land on lease.
