Former US envoy Tim Roemer calls for restraint and calm in Jammu and Kashmir

Updated : September 06, 2019 10:29 PM IST

Former US ambassador to India, Tim Roemer, on Friday called for restraint, calm in Kashmir, and appealed to India and Pakistan to bilaterally address the concerns in the Valley.

Last month, New Delhi scrapped the controversial Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Roemer said, "I was fortunate enough to visit Kashmir personally. It is a gorgeous, unique and very special place and the world recognises both the beauty of Kashmir but also the volatility."

"Both sides need to respect human rights, respect the political representation and work towards peace in both the roles,” he added.

When asked about his reaction to Imran Khan’s op-ed in The New York Times, he said, "We need the leadership of both Imran Khan and Narendra Modi to exercise calm and restraint to work towards peace and stability in that part of the world. Talking about nuclear issues is not very helpful."
