Given that elections are less than 12 months away in India, one will have to brace with volatility in the market, said Ashok Wadhwa, Group CEO, Ambit.

Given that elections are less than 12 months away in India, one will have to brace with volatility in the market, said Ashok Wadhwa, Group CEO, Ambit.
"We also have a bigger and different challenge of what is happening around the globe – events like trade war etc. So Indian equities are likely to be impacted by local and global politics," he said.
Moreover, the macro factors in the last 6-12 months have not been favourable like oil price, which has impacted India’s current account deficit, inflation and its impact on currency.
However, the micros are starting to look up led by demand, greater capacity utilisation and increase in private investment for additional capacity, he said.
The one thing that is still not seen is new investments, new projects and private sector investment in infrastructure, said Wadhwa.
“We still see an element of tentativeness and nervousness in public sector institutions financing private sector for infrastructure projects. I guess they are all facing the pressure of current NPAs and how to deal with them," he said.
With regards to goods and services tax (GST), he said important reforms like this would take 2-3 years to settle and expect GST to play a significant role in the growth going forward.
“The government’s ability, desire and flexibility to continue monitoring, addressing pain points and listening to both the regulatory agencies, as well as business institutions and react positively have helped smoothen the curves over the last 12 months,” said Wadhwa.
According to him, India’s tax to GDP ratio must improve from 12-13 percent to 17-18 percent and hope GST is able to contribute significantly to that process.
