India sugar output seen higher at 32.6 metric tonne in 2018-19, says AISTA

Updated : March 20, 2019 05:50 PM IST

All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) has estimated sugar output to be at 32.6 million tonnes (mt) for 2018-19 against their earlier estimation of 32.5 mt because of recovery in the sugar production in  Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

"Because of higher output coming from UP and Maharashtra, we need to revise it by about 1 million tonne," said Praful Vithalani, chairman, (AISTA).

With regards to sugar pricing, Vithalani said India, unfortunately, follows world prices and is not a price maker.

India could have exported more sugar but the world requires raw product and the country has more of white sugar, said Vithalani.
