Supreme Court allows women to enter Sabarimala temple

Updated : September 28, 2018 04:10:56 IST

The 5-judge bench of Supreme Court lifts the ban on the entry of women in Sabarimala temple.

In a 4-1 majority verdict, the apex court opened the doors of Sabarimala temple to women of all age groups.

The court also said the discrimination of women based on biological factors cannot be constitutionally sustainable. However, Justice Indu Malhotra, the only woman judge on the bench had a dissenting view.

Earlier, women between the ages of 10 and 50 were not permitted to enter the temple owing to the 'impurities' of the menstrual cycle.

The Kerala government had supported the entry of women in the Sabarimala temple.
