Justice Ranjan Gogoi succeeds Dipak Misra as the next Chief Justice of India

Ranjan Gogoi has become the new Chief Justice of India. He is the first Supreme Court judge from the north-east to be appointed Chief Justice of India

He was born on November 18, 1954. The son of former Assam chief minister, late Keshab Chandra Gogoi, Justice Gogoi joined the bar in 1978.

He was appointed permanent judge of Gauhati high court on Feb 28, 2001 and transferred to the Punjab and Haryana high court on Sept 9, 2010.

He was appointed Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high court on February 12, 2011 and elevated as the judge of the Supreme court on April 23, 2012.

He will serve as Chief Justice of India till November 17, 2019. Justice Gogoi and three other senior SC judges held an unprecedented press conference on January 12, 2018.
