Almost two months after Cairn Energy won an arbitral award of $1.2 billion against the Indian government in a tax dispute, the company's CEO Simon Thomson met key finance ministry officials in India today.
The meeting, which came almost a week after Cairn moved a US Court for enforcement of the award, was chaired by finance secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey. CBDT chairman PC Mody and other officials from the north block were also part of the meeting.
Post the meeting, Simon Thomson said that it was a 'constructive dialogue.'
Meanwhile, CNBC-TV18 learns that the government is weighing its options to try and for the resolution of the tax dispute -- this includes a settlement under the "Vivaad Se Vishwas" scheme, which will cut Cairn's tax liabilities by upto 50 percent.
