The world's largest solar power park in Karnataka is now fully operational. Pavagada Solar Park is located in Karnataka's Tumkur and it generates 2,050 MW of clean energy.
The solar park is divided into 8 blocks of 250 MW each. It has high voltage supply lines, pooling stations and a pooling substation for evacuation. The project was developed by Karnataka Solar Park Development Corporation (KSPDCL).
It was planned to build a solar park of 2,000 MW in over 13,000 acres initially. An additional 50 MW was later added to the project. SB Energy’s recent addition of 200 MW makes the solar park the world's largest.
Pavagada Solar Park was conceptualised in February 2015. The park is built on drought-hit land leased from farmers. KSPDCL pays Rs 21,000 per acre a year to the farmers with a 5 percent escalation every two years. Karnataka is India's top solar generator according to Mercom India's solar project tracker.
