Indian Railways converted diesel locomotive into electric. Electric locomotive delivers 5,000 horsepower (vs 2,600 horsepower earlier).
The conversion cost is Rs 2.5 crore and the work on the project began on December 22, 2017.
The new locomotive dispatched on February 28, 2018. The diesel to electric locomotive conversion execution took 69 days.
After mandatory trials, the electric locomotive entered into service on December 3. It was launched from Varanasi to Ludhiana hauling 5,200 tonnes of load.
The maximum speed is 75 km/hr. This initiative will help railways reduce fuel bill and carbon emissions.
