Mumbai power outage row: Does India have the firepower to ward off cyber-attacks?

Updated : March 03, 2021 05:54 PM IST

The massive power outage that blacked out Mumbai on the 12th of October 2020 is back in the news again and has brought the focus back on cyber-attacks perpetrated by state actors.

A New York Times report has claimed that Chinese hackers may have caused the power outage in Mumbai.

The centre has however rebuffed those claims. Power minister RK Singh said that though China did try to infiltrate India's power supply, they did not succeed. He attributed the power outage to a human error.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra's power minister told the assembly that trojan horses had entered the systems, indicating that there was a foul play that led to the power outage.

To decode the cybersecurity challenges, Shereen Bhan spoke to Pavithran Rajan, former adviser to Home Ministry; Gulshan Rai, former DG at CERT-In and GK Pillai, former home secretary, ex-chairman of Data Security Council.
