India approves Covishield and Covaxin COVID-19 vaccines: Here are the key things to know

India’s wait for a COVID-19 vaccine is finally over as the country’s drug regulator, Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has given its approval for two COVID-19 vaccines as the coronavirus case count has surpassed over a crore.

The first vaccine, which has received the restricted emergency use approval, is Covishield, developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca and manufactured in India by the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute.

The second vaccine to get the green light is Covaxin, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
