HUL drops 'fair' from Fair & Lovely, here’s what it means according to experts

Updated : June 26, 2020 01:16 AM IST

Global FMCG giant Unilever, the parent company of Hindustan Unilever, has decided to remove the word "fair" from its four and a half decade old brand Fair & Lovely. It will also stop using words like 'fairness', 'whitening' and 'lightening' from its products. The company has said that it is committed to a skin care portfolio that's inclusive of all skin tones.

It's not just Unilever, last week, Johnson & Johnson, which sells skin care products under the Neutrogena brand, also decided to stop selling skin whitening creams. The company took Neutrogena Fine Fairness and Clean & Clear fairness cream off the shelves.

Actor and director Nandita Das, Harish Bijoor brand Guru and Sunil Alagh, managing director of SKA Advisors are in conversation with CNBC-TV18 to discuss whether this is a significant departure or a cosmetic change.
