Following a historic mandate, the Modi-led government is now expected to shift its focus on the governance. CNBC-TV18’s Anshu Sharma gets an in-depth analysis of what is on the agenda for the power sector.
First on the agenda for the power ministry will be tariff policy. Once approved by the cabinet, discoms will have to ensure 24/7 quality and reliable power supply. Consumers will have the right to compensation if discoms fail to provide standard performance.
The tariff policy will also ensure that inefficiencies due to high AT&C losses are not passed on to the consumers. It will also include better accountability of subsidy to consumers through DBT. Other provisions include pre-paid metering and ensuring timely payments to generating companies by the discoms.
Payment security mechanism and subsidy support for gas-based power projects were some of the key recommendations given by the group of ministers on stressed power projects. These recommendations may also get a cabinet nod.
