Surge in mineral imports raises concern for NITI Aayog

The government think tank NITI Aayog on Friday raised concerns over the surge in import of minerals at a review meeting with the Prime Minister's Office.

Mineral sector severely impacted by judicial orders and the FY18 mineral trade deficit is at 4.6 million tonne, according to Niti Aayog.

The think tank recommended the PMO to reduce export duty on iron ore to 15 percent from 30 percent.

It also suggested introducing a quantitative restriction of aluminium and copper imports.
