Ramesh Chand, a member of the NITI Aayog, on Friday said that reducing farm distress must be the short-term priority of the newly elected Narendra Modi government.
"For the past two years, agriculture prices have remained depressed. If you look at food inflation, it has become negative for certain months, which implies that terms of trade for agriculture in the last two years have turned adverse against agriculture. One way is that you effectively give Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) to more farmers and second is you do something to pay better prices to the farmers,” he said.
Speaking about broadening the scope of PM-KISAN scheme, Chand said, "That is a political call. BJP has mentioned it in their manifesto and accordingly I expect that it will come for implementation."
