Updated : October 04, 2018 10:49 PM IST

The government is trying to explore options to reduce India's dependence on imports and commerce minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday chaired an inter-ministerial meeting to discuss the impact of a weak rupee on trade as well as to review the trade deficit picture.

The ministry proposed long and short-term plans including non-tariff steps such as ramping up domestic production in the meeting, said people familiar with the matter.

It also asked the Reserve Bank of India and department of economic affairs (DEA) to pitch in with measures to curb imports of gold, diamond and crude, sources said.
