Assam's final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) excludes 40 lakh people

National citizen register(NRC) is a register of all the legal citizens in a state.

Over 40 lakh people have been excluded from the final draft of Assam's NRC.

The NRC was first created in 1951 as a list of Indian citizens in undivided Assam.The draft list is being updated for the first time after the 1951 census in the state

NRC is being updated to wean out cases of illegal migration from Bangladesh and other adjoining areas and Assam saw a series of protests against illegal foreigners between 1979-1985.

After multiple rounds of litigation, the supreme court had mandated a time-bound NRC update in 2013.

So what happens to the people whose names are not included in the draft list?

The process for claims and objections will begin on August 7 and continue till September 28.The final NRC will be released in December 2018.

Assam is the only state in india to have a register of its citizens.
