4 years of Swacch Bharat: Provision for toilets is a start for India, says Advent Private Equity chairman Naina Lal Kidwai

On the fourth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, Shereen Bhan spoke to Naina Lal Kidwai, chairman, Advent Private Equity, who is one of the corporates who has been vocal about the need for sanitation in India.
We have seen a huge increase in terms of penetration by way of provision of toilets particularly in rural India, Kidwai told CNBC-TV18.
“The statistics as of now have taken us from 40 percent to north of 80 percent and this is a huge achievement," Kidwai said. "We also have states which have declared themselves open defecation free (ODF) and districts competing with each other to do the same. So the language of ODF has entered every panchayat in India.”
On the provision of toilets, Kidwai said, "The provision of toilets is a start. We have to provide toilets, we have to make sure people use them, and that the toilets are maintained so that people continue to use them.”
