New tariff order on TV channels empowers consumers, says Trai

Updated : January 30, 2019 08:08 PM IST

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Wednesday said new tariff regime for television channels empower the consumers as it gives them a choice to pay for what they watch.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18's Ashmit Kumar, RS Sharma, chairman, said the migration rate in the DTH segment was not satisfactory, but it was not a worrying trend, "Consumers have a choice to select channels a-la- carte or bouquet or whatever, that is their choice."

The new framework by Trai allows consumers to select and pay only for the channels they wish to view, and requires TV broadcasters to disclose the maximum retail price (MRP) of each channel and that of bouquets.
