16 airports under AAI to go plastic free

16 airports under Airports Authority of India have been declared as single-use plastic free. These airports include Indore, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Tirupati, Trichy, Vijayawada, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Vadodara, Madurai, Raipur, Vizag, Pune, Kolkata, Varanasi.

Airports Authority of India has decided to ban the use of single-use plastic items across airports. Various steps have been undertaken like banning use of plastic straws, cutlery, plates etc.

AAI has engaged Quality Council of India to assess/check the implementation of the ban at 34 airports. The assessment will be completed by January 31, 2019.

AAI also plans to enhance its waste management systems and promote eco-friendly sustainable alternatives like use of bio-degradable garbage bags and installation of plastic bottle crushing machines

AAI airports have also started various awareness campaigns for sensitising all stakeholders towards the cause. In its bid to contribute to the national sustainable development goals.

AAI has formulated an environment policy to reduce green house gases and carbon footprint.
