Restarting India: Is auto sector ready for government's Aatma Nirbhar push? Experts discuss

India's auto sector has been facing major disruptions following the COVID-19 pandemic since March this year. Moreover, two consecutive years of de-growth had added to their woes.
At the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, India's industry veterans pitched for a GST cut and a scrappage policy, stating that the auto sector is going through one of the toughest times in history.
The government's focus -- and this came from three cabinet ministers who addressed the convention --  was on Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, greater localisation and stronger export growth.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal urged the industry to negotiate lower royalty payments and said that the government was looking at innovative credit guarantee schemes for exporters and exploring measures to reduce logistics costs.
Heavy Industries Minister Prakash Javadekar said that he would take up the auto sector's demand for GST reduction with the FM and PM and a global champion's scheme is on the anvil.
So, how are industry leaders looking at these messages? To discuss this further, CNBC-TV18's Parikshit Luthra spoke to Venu Srinivasan Chairman and MD of TVS Motor, Pawan Goenka MD and CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra and Guenter Butschek MD and  CEO of Tata Motors.
