Centre proposes uniform format for driving licence, vehicle registration certificate

Updated : November 09, 2018 07:26:30 IST

The road transport ministry is looking to standardise driving licence and vehicle registration documents by issuing uniform cards with the same security features across the country.

Centre hopes to have one uniform card format for the entire country instead of different formats and different colour coding followed by various state governments and union territories.

The government is looking to follow the UN guidelines on the driving licence and vehicle registration number as per international standards.

The new driving licence will be like a smart card, it will have a QR code, and will have near-field communication as well.

Right now, the government has issued a draft proposal and it is planning to roll out by July 1, 2019.
