The Narendra Modi government may announce a holistic or selective farm loan waiver for farmers grappling with falling prices of their crops and to tackle distress in the farm sector in the interim budget ahead of general election.

Farm loans totalling around Rs 1.47 lakh crore were waived off by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh after the Congress came to power last month.

In 2017, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab announced to write off unpaid loans. The country’s largest state waived off farm loans worth Rs 36,400 crore.

Ahead of the interim budget and the general elections, CNBC-TV18's Archana Shukla travels to Maharashtra's Wardha district and tries to gauge what is ailing rural India.
