Mission Paani: How UP's Bundelkhand is getting rid of a decade old water crisis

Updated : July 17, 2019 09:45 AM IST

Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh is setting an example by harvesting water to give its people access to clean water.

The region has faced the water crisis for a decade. While some complain, some live with it. Then there are those who step forward to make a difference.

One such person is Krishnanand, who lives in a temple in drought-hit Hamirpur. Alone, Krishnanand seeks to reinvent Hamirpur's barren landscape and turn it into a haven for people and animals living in the area.

Krishnanand has dug a 6-feet deep pond that will harvest water in the monsoon. It will ensure ready availability of water for locals for months.

A farm pond scheme is a key government focus for Bundelkhand today. Workers are paid between Rs 200 and Rs 250 each per day under MNREGA for digging work. This water harvesting construction has become a hub and symbol of natural prosperity.

It was a battle that Krishnanand won against massive odds with weather woes on one side and red-tapism and bureaucracy on the other. It's a reminder that the water crisis that looms over us all today does have solutions.
