DoT to auction 4G, 5G spectrum by October, says report

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to auction 4G and 5G spectrum by October, and would carry out the sale at prices recommended by the regulator, reported The Economic Times, citing a senior government official.

“The committee (looking into the regulator’s recommendations) has agreed that all available spectrum will have to be put up for auction, which we will take up to the DCC (Digital Communications Commission) on June 13,” an official was quoted as saying in the report.

The official said to the ET that contrary to the perception that the base prices recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India were too high to attract bids, the firms are ready for the spectrum sales.

The auction is expected to be the biggest to have taken place in the country, with 8,293.95 MHz of airwaves going under the hammer at an estimated total base price of Rs 5.77 lakh crore, the report said. The total base price was Rs 5.63 lakh crore for the auction that took place back in 2016, the report said.
