For Zoom, the India market saw 64x growth in the number of daily Zoom participants between January and April 2020, compared to global growth of 30x

Zoom has accelerated hiring for setting up its technology centre in India, the company's head of engineering and product Velchamy Sankarlingam told CNBC TV 18 on February 22. He added that Zoom saw faster growth in free user addition in India compared to global growth.

"India saw 64x growth in the number of daily Zoom participants between January and April 2020, compared to the global growth of 30x," Sankarlingam said.

"Zoom also saw 4x growth in paid customers signing up in India," he added.

Zoom CEO Eric Yuan had said at the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum on Thursday (February 18) that the company saw a 30x growth globally in Zoom participants from [around 10 million in] December 2019 to 350 million in March 2020.

"We are giving many educational institutions in India free Zoom service. India has many multinationals and we saw a lot of growth there," the company's head of engineering and product added.

He said that 2,400 schools are currently using Zoom in India.

The video-conferencing company had last year talked about making significant investments in the country and had announced that it will open a technology centre in Bengaluru.

"Zoom has opened a virtual technology centre in Bengaluru. We have started hiring teams and they are working remotely. We will decide on physical office post-Covid. We are looking at accelerating hiring in further in India," Sankarlingam revealed.

Currently, Zoom has about 60+ employees in India, mostly in tech and sales roles. Yuan, during the Nasscom event, also called out India as an "important market".
