Govt likely to issue 2nd notice to WhatsApp to curb fake news, says report
The government has set up an internal group of officers to examine the possibility of sending a second notice to WhatsApp after it was dissatifised with messaging platform's response to its first warning, reported The Economic Times on Wednesday.
Reacting to the growing instances of lynching of innocent people owing to large number of irresponsible messages, the IT Ministry had asked WhatsApp to take immediate action and ensure that the platform is not used for such malafide activities.
Taking cognisance of the Indian government’s concerns over the misuse of its platform, Facebook-owned WhatsApp urged users to check information before sharing it and cautioned them about the spread of fake news.
But the IT ministry isn't happy with the actions taken by WhatsApp and has tasked the group to identify specific technical measures which WhatsApp can be asked to implement, the report said citing unidentified sources.
The government is of the view that if WhatsApp can locate specific groups and target audiences for advertisement purposes, it should be able to use similar methods to identify groups where rumours and provocative messages are causing a stir, the report said.
