An inter-ministerial meeting headed by home secretary Rajiv Gauba had submitted a report citing that heads of social media platforms should face criminal proceedings if their platforms are used to spread fake news which may lead to lynching and riots, the report said.

Facebook's effort to finalise a candidate for top level roles for the Indian units of the social media giant has run into troubled waters as executives are apprehensive about the threat of personal liability in the case of misuse of social media platforms, a report by The Times of India said.

David Fischer, vice-president of global marketing, Facebook, was in India to interview candidates including the heads of Star India to Hotstar but was not been able to finalise on the same, the report said, adding that Umang Bedi was the last managing director of Facebook’s India operations who quit last year and since then the position has remained unfilled.
Earlier, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, should take accountability and responsibility to ensure the spread of fake news, the report said.
