Apple Music vs Spotify: Choose your go-to music app based on this quick analysis
The world's most popular music streaming app Spotify has added more than 1 million users in India in less than a week since the launch. But the app faces stiff competition from the existing music streaming platforms such as Apple Music.
Spotify offers a wide range of music and also gives the option of trying out the premium service at Rs 13 for a day but users can stream music on the app for free.
Had Spotify been launched earlier, it would have probably been the only app on everyone's phone to stream music in India because it can be accessed for free.
Here's a quick analysis of both the apps:
Undoubtedly, Spotify has an upper hand on the pricing segment as compared to Apple Music.
Spotify Premium offers its monthly subscription at Rs 129 per month for full access and unlike other music streaming apps, it also gives users the option to opt for the daily pay package at Rs 13, the weekly package at Rs 39, half-yearly package at Rs 719  and the yearly package at Rs 1,189.
Apple Music, on the other hand, gives only one option and that is to pay Rs 120 per month.  Effectively, the user will be paying Rs 360 for three months, Rs 600 for six months and Rs 1,200 for a year.
Listening to music
The major difference between Apple and Spotify is that Spotify allows the user to stream music for free, but with ads. If the user wants to upgrade to the premium package, he or she can.
In Apple, however, that is not an option. When the user signs up for Apple Music, they are given the option to use the app for free, for 90 days. And if they like the app, they can continue using the app by paying the monthly subscription.
But there's a drawback. When users are streaming music, the free Spotify feature does not give the option to stream music without the internet, that is they are required to have a WiFi connection or mobile data turned on to download the song. To listen to music offline or to download songs, the user will have to buy the premium feature.
Apple lets the user add the song in their music library and download songs even during the free-trial period.
The free Spotify, also, seems to be sketchy when listening on mobile data. Most times, when searching for music, the app does not load and if it does, the sound quality of the song is not up to the mark. Songs on Apple Music have the same sound quality, be it online or offline.
Music
Both the apps have a wide range of songs, from native-language songs to off-beat English music. The wide range of music is a cherry on the top for music lovers.
When the user is installing the apps, both the apps ask for the user's preference in music genres so that the apps can automatically suggest similar kind of music artists, songs, etc. This is common across every music streaming app.
What's different is that Apple does not curate any specialized playlists for the user based on their tastes, it only suggests music artists and albums. Spotify, however,  does. Whenever the user opens Spotify, they will find a playlist with the name 'Your Daily Mix 1' or 'Your Daily Mix 2' and so on.
Apple is popular for its curated playlists. Apple Music has its own set of curated playlists based on the genres and most of them are updated on a weekly basis. There's 'Friends Mix', 'Chill Mix' and 'New Music Mix' which is updated weekly. Spotify does not have this feature. Spotify gives the user playlists based on their preference, such as 'Top 100 Indie', 'Sounds of Delhi', among others, and public playlists of other Spotify users are available. Public playlists of other Apple Music users are also accessible on the app.
Also, Spotify only gives the option of listening to podcasts apart from songs. Apple, however, gives users the option of podcasts, music videos, radio, and short films.
Followers
On Apple Music, users can follow their friends who are using Apple Music. The users can share playlists and keep track of what new song their friends are listening to. If they like an artist on Apple Music, the app will give updates on the upcoming songs and other updates from the artists.
On Spotify, the user follows the artists they like and the friends are the same as the user's Facebook friends who are on Spotify. The user will have to connect Facebook to app and the app lets the user update on social media what they're listening to.
