The Gujarat government is considering restricting the number of cabs run by Ola and Uber to 20,000 vehicles each, a move prompted by public safety and "other concerns", The Economic Times reported.
“The aggregator shall not attach more than 20,000 vehicles under one licence and only one licence shall be issued to a company or an aggregator,” a draft issued by the Posts and Transport Department of Gujarat said, according to ET report.
Gujarat State on Demand Transportation Aggregator Rules, 2018’s main objective of capping the limit of vehicles is to get these services under the net of rules and bind them with conditions of the licences, a senior government official familiar with the developments told the paper.
Vehicles registered with ride hailing services such as Ola and Uber have been rising in the country, resulting in the decline of traditional taxi business, congested roads and public safety concerns including attacks on passengers, the report said, adding that similar moves are underway globally.
