Live Updates

Well that brings us to the end of our coverage for today. Join us again tomorrow as we have a triple header lined up at the tournament. The action starts with Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe at 8:30 AM then Netherlands vs Pakistan at 1:30 PM followed by India vs South Africa at 4:30 PM. Join us for all the updates from those three encounters. Till then it's goodbye!

Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): Interesting match, the wicket was different as the surface had some tennis ball bounce so slower balls, cutters were very effective. (On Glenn Phillips) Incredible, any hundred is amazing but the way he worked hard and put pressure on the opposition after our poor start. We were being aggressive but keeping it simple in the powerplay, the length ball was the most difficult to hit, so we stuck to that and those cutters. The boys executed the plans really well.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka Captain): First ten overs, we bowled really well. Credit to Glenn Phillips who played an outstanding knock but while fielding we dropped a few chances. Then 160 was maybe too much for us with the quality of Southee and Trent Boult. There is a way to chase big totals, but we lost early wickets and then lost them at regular intervals. We need to come out with a positive intent in the next couple of games.

That win helps New Zealand consolidate their spot at the top of the points table. Sri Lanka remain in fifth spot but now face an uphill task to make the knockouts.

Glenn Phillips (104 off 64 balls) Player of the Match: My conversation (with Mitchell) was to carry on as long as possible, play the right possible shots, was a little difficult against the slower balls, but we managed to get to a competitive total. I couldn't put away the slower ones, but managed to execute my skills against the pacers, especially when pace was on. The bowlers did well later on. I did cramp up a bit, lack of salts possibly there, the boys asked me not to take any further risks on limping away). They swung the new ball (Boult and Southee), the slower ones were holding onto the surface, getting early wickets was crucial and we managed to do that early.

New Zealand win by 65 runs!

STUMPED! That’s it then as Kumara charges out on the 2nd delivery but only connects with air as Conway whips off the bails. Another superb victory for New Zealand where they totally dominated their opponent.

Sri Lanka 102/10 after 19.2 overs.

Southee signs off with another miserly over. Ranjitha cannot take any runs off the first 5 balls. There’s a moment when Southee slips in a WIDE down leg and jokes with the Umpire about referring the decision. Rajitha flicks the last delivery for a single. Just 2 runs comes off the over.

Sri Lanka 101/9 after 19 overs.

Tim Southee [3.0-1-10-1] is back into the attack

Sodhi starts with a WIDE down leg. Ranjitha drives the 2nd ball for a single. Kumara takes on the short delivery as he pulls for FOUR. Just 6 runs come off the over.

Sri Lanka 99/9 after 18 overs.

FOUR! Sodhi lands it too short and Kumara pulls through midwicket to get off the mark.

Ish Sodhi [2.0-0-14-1] is back into the attack as Lahiru Kumara walks out to bat.

What a spell this has been from Boult! He gives away just 2 runs off the first 5 balls. Boult then end with a high bouncer and Shanaka is sucked into the pull only to find the man at deep square leg. Boult is congratulated on the field as the crowd applaud his best-ever T20I figures of 4-0-13-4.

Sri Lanka 93/9 after 17 overs.

Boult picks up his best-ever T20I figures of 4/13! Ends his spell with a bouncer and Shanaka goes for the hook only to send it looping high to deep square leg for an easy catch.

Shanaka c Mitchell b Boult 35 (32)
