Swachh Survekshan 2019: Narendra Modi's Varanasi slips to 70th spot in government's cleanliness survey

Varanasi was ranked 32nd in 2017, 65th in 2016 and 418th in 2014.

Indore was Wednesday adjudged India's cleanest city for the third straight year in the central government's cleanliness survey.

Varanasi scored 3036 marks out of 5000 in the survey.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi, has slipped significantly in the Swachh Survekshan 2019 ranking to the 70th spot from 29th last year, after consistently improving its ranking. The holy city was ranked 32nd in 2017, 65th in 2016 and 418th in 2014.

PM Modi has personally put in a lot of efforts to push a cleanliness drive in Varanasi, leading from the front at the iconic Assi ghat in November 2014, when the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan was launched.

Within Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi came at the fourth place after Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Jhansi, but ahead of Agra and Saharanpur. Ghaziabad has been ranked at 13th spot nationally.

Varanasi managed a score of 3,036 out of 5,000 in the survey, which calculated scores on four parameters of service level progress, certification, direct observation and citizen feedback and swachhta app.

The cleanliness survey was conducted from January 4 to 31 in over 4,000 urban local bodies of the country.

Indore was Wednesday adjudged India's cleanest city for the third straight year in the central government's cleanliness survey.

The Swachh Survekshan awards 2019 were conferred by President Ram Nath Kovind at a ceremony in Delhi.

While the New Delhi Municipal Council area was given the 'Cleanest Small City' award, Uttarakhand's Gauchar was adjudged the 'Best Ganga Town' in the central government survey.

The cleanliness awards are given by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The survey is the part of the Modi government's flagship Swachch Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) programme or Clean India Mission, which was launched on October 2, 2014.
