In the 2016 Assembly elections, Velachery was won by Vagai Chanderasekar of DMK.
Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by MK Ashok of AIADMK.
In the 2016 assembly polls, Vagai Chanderasekar garnered 70,139 votes, securing over 39.96 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 8,872 votes.
In percentage terms, the victory margin was 5.05 percent.
The constituency polled 1,75,607 votes in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly polls with a voter turnout of 58.36 percent.
The Velachery constituency has a literacy level of 90.33 percent.
A total of 26 candidates stood in the 2016 elections.
