US President Donald Trump will hold extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, the second and final day of his maiden visit to India. President Trump and PM Modi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks at Hyderabad House on issues relating to trade, defence, energy and more.
Trump and First Lady Melania will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. From there, they will go to Rajghat to pay homage at the 'samadhi' of Mahatma Gandhi. This will be followed by restricted and delegation-level talks between Trump and Modi at Hyderabad House, after which Modi will host a lunch.
There will be a lot of conversation on trade and the President may send out a tough message to India on market access issues that US companies are facing here. This includes high tariffs on electronic devices, medical devices, agri goods and also issues related to data localization and e-commerce at companies like MasterCard, Walmart and Amazon are facing in the Indian market.
India may raise concerns about tightening of H-1B visa rules.
There will be no trade deal at the end of this visit but both sides are likely to commit themselves on signing FTA in future. However, there may be some sort of a talk on mini trade deal. The vision document may be agreed upon by the 2 sides.
After this 2 hour long conversation, there will be signing of agreements. These agreements may include trade facilitation, IPR, healthcare, energy and home loan security.
The big ticket item will be defence deal. There will be $3 billion defence deal that will be agreed upon, finally concluded after months of negotiations between India and United States – that includes sale of 26 MH-60 helicopters for Indian Navy. There may also be a deal for Apache helicopters for Indian Army but that remains to be seen whether it will be concluded during this visit or in the next couple of weeks.
There will also be a business event for President Trump at the US Embassy where he will be meeting Indian companies investing in the manufacturing sector in the United States.
The last event for President Trump will be Presidential banquet at the Rashtrapati Bhavan where who’s who of India and who’s who of India Inc will also be present.
