Telangana seeks approval for new zoning system

In a move that could result in more local government jobs in the state, Telangana has sought the centre's approval for a new zonal system in the state.

In 2016, Telangana was divided into 31 districts, from ten originally, which have finally been categorised under seven zones and two multi-zones.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) met with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday, seeking comprehensive amendments to the presidential order to facilitate implementation of the new zonal system in the state.

The proposal has been ratified by the state cabinet and "in order to take administration closer to the people — there is a need to issue a fresh presidential order adjusting zones, multi-zones and state cadre under Section 371-D of the Indian constitution," added KCR.

The new system also makes it easier for for candidates from backward districts in the state to compete for jobs, as the definition for locals has been revised to "those who have studied class I to VII in Telangana" instead of class VII to XII, as was the case earlier.

KCR is expected to fly back to New Delhi, post the June 4 to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind to discuss this new zoning system.
