Despite the reinstatement, Verma will not be allowed to make any major policy decisions till the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) inquiry against him is over, according to Tuesday's ruling.
The Supreme Court verdict was read out by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul on behalf of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who was on leave today.
Here are the main highlights from the case, commonly referred as CBI vs CBI, in 5 points:
  • The Supreme Court delivered its verdict on Tuesday on two petitions that had challenged the Central government’s order against CBI director Alok Verma. Of the two petitions on which the top court ruled today, one was filed by Verma himself while the other was submitted by NGO Common Cause.
  • The apex court quashed the October 23 notification of the Central government and reinstated Verma as CBI director. The notification was issued by the CVC.
  • The Supreme Court verdict comes with a condition that Verma cannot take major policy decisions till the CVC inquiry against him is over.
  • The top court verdict also implies that the appointment of M Nageshwar Rao as interim chief of CBI has been set aside.
  • The Supreme Court also directed the High Power Committee under DSPE Act to consider Verma's case within 7 days.
