Lok Sabha Elections 2019: The stage is set for polling in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections. As many as 117 constituencies, spread over 13 States and two Union Territories, are going to polls today. Several prominent leaders of various parties like BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad in Kerala, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD leader Sharad Yadav are among them. Here are the latest updates and developments from the third phase of voting in the general elections today:

But you cannot speak this language when you are swearing by secularism.Sidhu, who made the remarks earlier this month at a rally in Katihar, has been banned for 72 hours by the Election Commission of India as a punitive measure.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday mocked Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee for dreaming of becoming the PM and said she would have bought the post with the money looted from chit fund scams had it been up for auction.The country needs a government with "vision and not division", Modi said "It was with the power of your vote that the army could conduct surgical strikes". The prime minister, who was addressing a poll rally in this industrial town said "She (Banerjee) is dreaming of becoming prime minister and had this position been up for auction both she and the Congress would have bought it with the money looted by them. Referring to the chit fund scams in Bengal, Modi said that people will suffer when the chief minister of their state is seen hobnobbing and standing in favour of those who are involved in scams.

    Khanakul: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Tuesday questioned the timing of the Lok Sabha polls, claiming that the voting process was dragged for three months at the behest of the BJP. Addressing a rally here in Hooghly district, Banerjee also said that polls have never been held for such a long period of time in the history of the country. 

    "It's our bad luck that Lok Sabha elections are being held in peak summer. It's so hot now. People have to cast their votes battling this heat. Last year, we (West Bengal government) had finished the panchayat elections by March (last year). But they (the BJP) dragged the general election till May," she said. The general election was planned in a manner to suit the BJP leaders, she claimed. "Polls are being held in seven phases. It has been planned in such a way that the BJP leaders can move from one state to another for campaigning," she added. (PTI)

    Punjabi folk and sufi singer Hans Raj Hans was today named one of the seven BJP candidates for Delhi, which votes on May 12. Hans Raj Hans has been picked for North West Delhi instead of incumbent MP Udit Raj, who had threatened to resign if he was dropped. Hans Raj Hans had joined the BJP in 2016 after quitting the Congress. He was also a member of the Akali Dal. Hans Raj will contest against Congress's Rajesh Lilothia and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Gugan Singh. Meanwhile, BJP MP Udit Raj removed 'Chowkidar' title from his Twitter handle. Hinting to resign from the party, he tweeted, "I am waiting for a ticket if not given to me I will do goodbye to the party."

Following the commencement of polling at 7 pm, an average 39.27 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 1 pm, according to official figures. (PTI)

Pointing out that the central forces do not have the right to ask voters to vote for BJP candidates, Banerjee said the Election Commission has been apprised of it.


    "I have got information that the central forces are sitting inside booths in Englishbazar in Maldaha Dakshin and asking voters to vote for the BJP. They do not have the right to do such thing. We have informed the Election Commission about our reservations regarding this," she said. "Why are they (central forces) doing it? The police cannot enter a polling booth," she added. (PTI)

The Congress president offered prayers at the Shiva temple in Beneshwar Dham, where an annual tribal fair is held.  PM Modi did the most injustice to tribals in the past five years. He did not fulfill promises and ran a government for 15-20 rich people, Gandhi alleged. The BJP has done injustice in five years.     Thiruvananthapuram: Seven voters who have arrived to cast their votes died in Kerala. Vijaya (65) waiting in Chokli Ramavilasom HSS polling booth in Kannur district, Chacko Mathai (66) in Pezhumpara DPM UPS in Pathanamthitta and Thresya Kutty at Ernakulam Kaanjoor Parappuram booth fell unconscious and died. Mani who came to vote at Kollam Kilikollur LP School booth, Taliparamba native Venugopala Marar, Balan of Wayanad Adivasi Colony, Prabhakaran from Mavelikkara are also among the dead. Chacko Mathai lost consciousness inside the polling booth. Mani’s death occurred after coming to know that his name is not in the voters’ list. Venugopala Marar had returned home after voting. Balan was on his way to the polling booth. Polling officer Pranukumar who was on duty in Alappuzha Piralassery Lower Primary School developed fits. He was shifted to hospital.

    The ruling AIADMK Tuesday announced its candidates for by-polls to four Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu scheduled on May 19. Party Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami said in a statement that the decision to field the candidates to Sulur, Aravakurichi, Tirupprankundram and Ottapidaram (SC) was taken by the party's Parliamentary Board. Palaniswami is the Chief Minister of the state while Panneerselvam is his deputy. The two leaders named VP Kandasamy (Sulur), VV Senthilnathan (Aravakurichi), S Muniyandi (Tirupparankundram) and P Mohan to Oddapidaram as the party's nominees. Mohan is a former MLA while the others hold various party posts. Of these four seats, by-polls to Tirupparankundram and Sulur were necessitated due to the death of their sitting AIADMK legislators. Aravakurichi and Ottapidaram fell vacant following the disqualification of AIADMK MLAs representing them, V Senthil Balaji and R Sundararaj, respectively, after they were part of the 18 ruling party MLAs who revolted against Palaniswami for merging his led faction with that of Panneerselvam then.
