This comes just hours after Tamilisai Soundararajan, Tamil Nadu BJP president, claimed that DMK chief MK Stalin was in talks with the BJP through an unnamed mutual connection.
“There are no chances of us allying with the DMK especially with Stalin as the party’s president,” said BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy. “He (Stalin) has turned a poll battle into a personal one that he has waged against the prime minister.”
Earlier, while speaking to reporters in Tuticorin, Soundararajan had said, “Everybody knows that Stalin is talking to Rahul Gandhi on one side, and the BJP and KCR (K Chandrasekhar Rao) on the other side. The DMK changes its colours.”
On his part, Stalin had responded to the claim by saying he would quit active politics if the BJP could prove Soundararajan’s allegations. “If Tamilisai and Modi prove that I was in touch with the BJP, I will quit politics. But will they quit if they cannot prove these charges?” he asked.
The BJP continues to maintain that a scenario where the DMK is in touch with two parties is not new. “If Stalin denies being in touch with the BJP, he should also answer for why he met Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,” said Thirupathy, adding “the DMK is keeping its options open. But the BJP is clear that it will not ally with the party.”
Speaking to reporters at the Chennai Airport earlier today, Stalin had categorically denied being in talks with Rao to form a federal front. “I don’t think there is a possibility to form a third front,” said Stalin. “In any case, all of this becomes a possibility only after May 23.”
The BJP is yet to respond to Stalin’s demand for proof that the DMK was in back-channel talks with the saffron party, to offer outside support.
