The Congress on Sunday suspended Shakeel Ahmed, former Member of Parliament, with immediate effect, for contesting as an independent candidate from the Madhubani Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar against the party's decision.

Along with Ahmed, the party has also suspended Bhavana Jha, an MLA from Benipatti, for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities with regards to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Nearly nine crore voters will decide the fate of 674 candidates, including political bigwigs Rajnath Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani, in the fifth phase of polling on Monday in 51 Lok Sabha constituencies in seven states.
Election to 542 Lok Sabha seats is being conducted in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. Results will be declared on May 23.
