Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat by defeating Left Democratic Front's (LDF) PP Suneer by a massive margin of over 4 lakh votes.
According to Election Commission, Gandhi has polled 7,06,367 votes while Sunner secured 2,74,597 votes.
Gandhi conceded defeat in his traditional north bastion Amethi in Uttar Pradesh against BJP's Smriti Irani, now being described as 'giant-slayer'.
The NDA has fielded Thushar Vellappally of Bharat Dharma Jana Sena from the constituency comprising seven assembly segments in Wayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.
The Wayanad seat, which was created in 2009, shares its borders with Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and Mysuru in Karnataka.
It is predominantly rural and of its seven assembly segments, three are in Wayanad district, three in Malappuram and one in Kozhikode district.
Two assembly segments in the constituency - Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady -- are reserved for tribals who constitute around 18 percent of the Wayanad's population.
Vandoor in Malappuram district is reserved for Scheduled Caste.
