Lok Sabha Election Results: PM Modi takes early lead as counting of 600 million votes begins

India began counting hundreds of millions of votes in its general election on Thursday, with a coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party taking an early lead, TV channels and the Election Commission said. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is leading with more than 300 seats. The party has crossed the halfway mark of 272 needed to command a majority in the Lok Sabha. The party has gained the majority in leads. Exit polls had predicted an outright majority for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the seven-phase election that ended on Sunday. Six of the seven exit polls conducted have predicted that the NDA would comfortably surpass the majority mark of 272 seats in the lower house of parliament.
