Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday won the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Kummanam Rajasekharan by a margin of 1 lakh votes.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday won the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Kummanam Rajasekharan by a margin of 1,00,132 votes.
Tharoor polled 4,14,057 votes while Rajasekharan has secured 3,13,925 votes.
The prestigious Thiruvananthapuram constituency, which saw a fierce triangular contest between Tharoor, CPI leader C Divakaran (LDF) and Rajashekharan, the percentage touched 73.45, the lowest.
Tharoor first won the Thiruvananthapuram seat in 2009 by a margin of 99,998 votes. In 2014, Tharoor’s victory margin reduced to 15,470 votes and the BJP’s O Rajagopal came in second.
However, Tharoor said he feels like a batsman who has scored a century while his team has lost. Tharoor's remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi led his Bharatiya Janata Party towards what looks set to be a resounding victory for a second term in office.
"I feel like a batsman who has scored a century while his team has lost! It's a bittersweet emotion I will take some time to reflect on," Tharoor tweeted.
