    • Punjab polls: Phenomenal rise in AAP's vote share, sharp drop in Cong vote percentage

The Aam Aadmi Party got a three-fourths majority in the assembly polls in Punjab, bagging 42 per cent of the votes cast -- an increase of 18 percentage points over the 2017 elections. The AAP, which turned out to be the single largest party, by bagging 92 seats in the 117-member assembly completely outclassed traditional players like the Congress, BJP, SAD and BSP. The AAP's vote share was 42.01 per cent as against 23.7 per cent in the 2017 assembly polls, according to the data available with the Election Commission website. While the Congress saw a sharp decline in party's vote share, the vote percentage of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) fell by around 7 per cent. Congress candidates won 18 seats, making it the second largest party, to register a vote share of 22.98 per cent as against 38.5 per cent it got in 2017. In 2017, the party won 77 assembly seats and formed the government. Both BJP and SAD had a dismal show at the hustings with the parties winning two and three seats, respectively. SAD's vote share fell from 25.2 per cent in 2017 to 18.38 per cent in 2022. The party was relegated to third position after winning 15 seats in 2017 after a rule of 10 years. However, in 2022, the party had a dismal show with only three seats in its kitty.

    • Vinod Sharma, Political Editor of Hindustan Times to CNBC-TV18

"My lesson from the UP elections is that the people have not gone for the change, they have gone for balance in the state legislature. Earlier the BJP had a brute majority 325 or 320 odd seats maybe more and the Samajwadi Party was about 40 odd. Now you have an altogether different situation. And the Samajwadi Party has rightly and truly emerged as a robust opposition, it has not been able to form a government and there are good reasons for that.

SP could not attract the communities that it was trying to reach out to in Western UP where it was stated to have done very well in the first two-three rounds. It is quite evident that the vote share of Mayawati, the captive vote of Mayawati which is the Jatavs, they have shifted to the BJP giving it the relief that it was so direly needed.

Punjab, to me, looks another Delhi for AAP and Congress. The kind of landslide victory it has registered in Punjab is quite similar to what it achieved in 2015 in Delhi, and now it is the graveyard of Congress. You see the Congress has to introspect in a state which it gave the first Dalit chief minister and a state which has 34 scheduled caste constituencies, reserved constituencies, its own chief ministerial candidate has lost both the seats."

    • People buried politics of caste, religion: Yogi Adityanath on BJP's UP victory

People have buried the politics of caste and religion by ensuring the victory of BJP and its allies in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday. • Sanjeev Srivastava, Political Commentator to CNBC-TV18

“In UP, Mayawati’s complete decimation has worked to the advantage of BJP. That is one of the key factors why BJP has been successful in getting the numbers it has. Another factor was that we kept hearing about how Prime Minister is so good, India’s respect in the eyes of the world has gone up, how the welfare measures are working so well, so it is very clear that the devotion or the way people and that they are mesmerised by Prime Minister Modi. So Narendra Modi by and large has carried the day through for the BJP not just in UP but also in Uttarakhand, Goa etc.”

    • Rohan Gupta, Congress Spokesperson to CNBC-TV18

“Every election results teaches you certain lessons. In this election, lessons are very clear and we are ready to learn. We humbly accept people’s verdicts. In Punjab, for 4.5 years there was strong anti-incumbency and the Congress party knew that that is why we took certain decisions, projected a new leader etc. However, personally, I feel our decisions were delayed quite a bit and by that time people of Punjab had already made their mind for a change. This time around we fought elections very strongly, even if in Uttar Pradesh we have not done well but still in all the 5 states I don’t see any kind of lack of effort by our workers or leaders as far as the campaign is concerned.”

PM Narendra Modi will address BJP karyakartas from the party HQ at around 7 PM, according to people in the know.

    • Syed Zafar Islam, BJP Rajya Sabha MP to CNBC-TV18

“BJP has created history today. For the last 37 years, no political party had a repeat performance and repeat government. This is the first time in the last 37 years that both in UP and since the formation of Uttarakhand no other political party has formed the government back to back. Having said that, what is more, important for all of us, is to realise that there is one man in our party and under his leadership we have fought all elections – Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is his popularity, his approach towards the people of this country, that he takes along everyone - 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ is the mantra we have. We have been able to demonstrate on the ground – whether it’s distributing ration, empowering common man on the street etc, he has been able to do that. Also, Yogi Adityanath’s contribution cannot be discounted. He is a very popular chief minister, he has delivered to people’s expectations, he has come across as somebody who can maintain the law and order situation. So it is a collective effort by the party.”

The BJP has won 20 seats in the state, just one short of the magic figure of 21 required to form a majority in the 40member assembly. Speaking to reporters in Goa, Fadnavis said, "The BJP is again winning nearly 20 seats in Goa and we may win a couple of seats more. It is the continuation of the trust reposed by the people of Goa in our leader PM Narendra Modi."
