A mother, a lawyer, a politician, a parliamentarian, and the former foreign minister of India, Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday night. She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at 9:30 pm after suffering a massive cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
The nation is in mourning. She was cremated with full state honors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various other dignitaries from India and abroad paid homage and tributes to Swaraj. The popular foreign minister who touched many hearts on social media and across the country and the world is being missed by everyone.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, National Spokesperson of Congress said, “Sushmaji was somebody who, despite very clearly defined political boundaries, could not be contained within political boundaries. She really transcended them. You will find that there is hardly any person in politics across the spectrum who would be personally opposed to her in any manner. In fact when anything against her was said, people would automatically become careful, milder, and cautious. That is because of her remarkable graciousness which I have always felt whenever I have interacted with her.”
Speaking about Sushma Swaraj’s approach to diplomacy, Amar Sinha, former envoy to Afghanistan said, “Her approach was very simple; to push what the prime minister had asked. She built personal relationships, relationships of great trust and led some major initiatives in the neighborhood.”
Speaking about Sushma Swaraj being a part of George Fernandes’ legal team during the emergency, Sanjay Hegde, SC lawyer said: “At the height of emergency, joining George Fernandes’ team takes a lot of bravery. At that stage, she was a young lawyer, barely in her 20s. She stood up to somebody who was the iron lady of her time, Indira Gandhi. Courage is the foremost virtue that people look for in a lawyer.”
