One of the few criteria for voting in the election is to have a voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of India and your name should be on the electoral rolls.

The 17th Lok Sabha election is around the corner and will be held in seven phases across the country. The general elections, as well as, few state assembly elections are scheduled to be held from April 11. One of the few criteria for voting in the election is to have a voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of India and your name should be on the electoral rolls.
It is always better to check if your name is on the electoral rolls. Sometimes, it may happen that your name might be missing from the list as the voting list keeps changing in the country.
Here's how you can check if your name is added to the electoral list:
    • Go to the National Voter Services Portal's (NVSP) Electoral Search page.
    • Here you can search for your name by two methods: either you can manually enter all your details in the portal or simply by entering Electoral Photo ID Card (EPIC) number. The EPIC number is mentioned in bold letters on your voter identity card.
    • If you have the EPIC number, you can follow these steps to check your name on the voter list:
      • Visit the NVSP Electoral Search page.
      • Click or tap on Search by EPIC number.
      • Enter your EPIC number and select the state from the drop-down menu and key in the captcha code you see on the image and click on Search.
      • If your name shows up below the Search button, your name is on the electoral rolls. If nothing shows up, there's a good chance that your name is not included in the list.
      • If you do not have your voter identity card and henceforth the EPIC number, you can follow these steps to check your name:
        • Visit the NVSP Electoral Search page.
        • Click or tap on Search by Details.
        • Feed in all the details, which includes your name, gender, age, Assembly constituency, etc and enter the code you see on the captcha image and click on Search.
        • If your name shows up below the Search button, your name is on the electoral rolls. If nothing shows up, there's a good chance that your name is not included in the list.
        • Voter identity cards often have misspelt names and there is a good chance that the Search by Details method may not yield the desired results because the spelling of the name doesn't match that on the Election Commission's database.
        • That's why it is suggested to search for your name with the use of EPIC number as it's far less likely to return a false result.
        • Check By SMS:
          • Some states such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Bihar also let you check whether your name is on the voter list or not via SMS.
          • Go to the Election Commission's page for Chief Electoral Officers' (CEO) websites and select your state from the list. You can find the option that lets you search the electoral rolls.
